Hack 4 WATER Brasil

Hack 4 Water Brasil is a program to bring together and articulated a diverse community to boost technology, activism, knowledge and innovation to create and develop water-related solutions and data analysis in sanitation.

The goal is to support water-related innovations and business that can be applied in Brazilian cities so that the 6th UN Sustainable Development Goal can be achieved.

NEARLY 20% OF THE BRAZILIAN POPULATION DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS TO POTABLE WATER

50% OF THE BRAZILIAN POPULATION DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE SANITATION NETWORK

WATER LOSSES IN THE DISTRIBUTION IN BRAZIL IS 36.7%

34% OF THE TREATED WATER IS RELEASED IN THE SYSTEM WITHOUT MEASURING

Two main

Challenges

Optimising the visualisation of national sanitation data system (SNIS)

Citizens and water community leaders will be able to be aware and also use the SNIS data for practical purposes.

Impact Hub São Paulo, the Ministry of Cities of Brazil and the German Cooperation GIZ selected two relevant challenges in the Brazilian context.

From March 15th to 16th, at Impact Hub São Paulo, we realised a free event to develop new solutions related to water and sanitation through multi-sector collaboration, involving strategic partners, population, social entrepreneurs, activists, developers, engineers, designers.

Through the hackathon we had:

Complementary knowledge and skills working together

Hackathon

Methodology

A process combining order and chaos, through design thinking, allows understanding the context and problem, generating ideas and creating prototypes.

The participants teamed up based on affinity, common ideas and their super powers.

Mentors, specialists and partner organisations tracked and supported the development of all the projects.

Some participants stayed overnight working on their projects. However, they balanced well resting, eating, warming up and interacting.

Learnings and

Insights

Generated insights regarding

SNIS data

Data integration to cross information can and generate more qualified insights.

-

Geolocation and granulation to understand peculiar characteristics in a country of continental dimensions.

-

API and web service, so developers can access and process public data to create solutions not yet imagined.

Screen Shot 2018-04-06 at 20.35.01.png

Friendly format for exporting the tables, reducing the time of processing and use of the information.

-

Increased reliability of data through capacity building at municipality level and automated data collection.

-

Place SNIS as a trustworthy source of relevant information for managers, politicians, organisations and citizens. Nowadays, its use is by researchers who lack other research sources.

Generated insights regarding

Water Losses

Distributed learning and surveillance can be a way of including the population in monitoring.
